Indian Trailing Florals - Historical Patterning

Indian trailing floral pattern

Raspberry Whip - Indian Trailing Floral, 2024

Excited by the possibilities of surface pattern design, six months later I continued my pattern design studies, this time with Repertoire, another 12-week course given by Swedish teacher and patternista, Bärbel Dressler.

A truly amazing course packed full of information about historical patterns and how to recreate them for modern day use. Applying this knowledge to my work has taken my designs to the next level.

The origin of the Indian trailing floral patterns began between the 17 and 18 century in India. Fabrics were produced and exported to Europe after which they started producing their own. Later, Indienne became the term for any floral pattern, either produced in India or Europe.
